Stop Filling the Silence and Start Owning It

ree

Let’s start owning the pause and eliminate filler words.

When I first started speaking, I used to use so many filler words, it was embarrassing, now that I think about it, but I'm not trippin' or buggin' about that. I've moved on from feeling bad about my mistakes. I know I can share them with you and that's just what I'm doing.

This is what I know: one of the biggest shifts you can make as a speaker or communicator is learning to eliminate filler words like, "um, uh, and, you know." Those tiny words sneak in when we feel nervous or uncertain. Those are the primary reasons, but you know what they do? They distract your audience and they dilute your authority.

Silence is not your enemy. It’s your power. Did you know that great speakers speak slower than fast? Because they know that shows confidence and it gives their words weight. And this is the thing, as well, if you want to become better at speaking, these are some tips I want to remind you of:

1. Record yourself speaking for at least 60 seconds.

  1. Play back the audio or video.

  2. Count how many filler words you used.

You will start realizing where you are substituting words for silence.

More important points to remember is that your message deserves clarity. Your audience deserves confidence. And you? You deserve to speak with power and peace. No filler words required.

You are enough and your voice is enough, so let’s stop filling the silence and let’s start owning it. To hear the audio of this message, click here.
